“I have always had a thing about storytelling and in so showing the truth and detail of an idea. There’s something so special and important about the human condition in all it’s varieties and I love the tradition of how we pass this experience on. Especially as children, we understand our world through pictures and stories and learning - It gives us our context, our belief systems and most importantly makes us who we are - framing how we see the world. When studying for my Masters degree, in Children’s Illustration, it really became apparent that creation or representation of experience is really so vital, and I learnt that I could really contribute to this field. I also studied at Wimbledon School of Art, Special Effects and Technical Arts for my BA and this built a grounding of fabrication, stop motion animation, set design, creature making and prosthetics which really plays into my fascination with reality and believability within a story, however fantastical – the devil is in the illusion.”
“I am drawn to those parts of a film that seem to be so clear and still, the portraits with the impossibly real eyes and the way that these moments can convey so much and so simply. The magic moment when you believe it all. That unspoken moment of understanding you lose yourself to, that’s the bit I try to convey. I try to bring this connection and reality to my drawings - I try to assimilate that capture of depth and sincerity within mark making of ink work and with layers of texture. To bring a real life to the eyes.”
“Recently I have moved into creating more Home and Pet portraits for customers, working from life or from pictures however the situation dictates and enjoys working with scratchy dip pen and black ink to create that perfect one off commission. I also screen print from my drawings, I create in a variety of mix media too but something about working in ink that works well with how I express myself and draws me back in. I am happy to discuss projects and ideas too, to suit individual projects. Alongside this, I am also working on some children’s picture books and a graphic novel too, so hope to have these projects up and running in the next year and see how they fly too.”
“Thank you for coming to see my work and if you have a project or idea in mind just give me a shout.”
